Tour of the Weyr

The Weyr can be found on the Island of Hawaii inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park . As you enter you find yourself on a black sand beach. To your West are the active ocean entries and the active surface flows with occasional lava fountains and the steam plume. Behind you are the palis (cliffs) with spectacular lava falls some nights. East are recent flows extending to the new black sand beaches at Kalapana. West thru the steam and heat you can see where the Park visitors are - the rope marks the end of the safe zone any "unofficially" past that are snacks, Official visitors are the geologists of the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, occasional Rangers and our guests and will be wearing red vests. The the beach sits in a small bay with 3 to 10 foot waves to play in. upslope from the Weyr is the active vent at Pu'u O'O . Oh - one word of caution at the Park's request - please stay off the active entry bench area - it is very unstable and dragons playing there might start it sliding suddenly into the sea taking the playing dragons and dragonfriends with it.

Resort Ammenities and Activities

Aetobot schematicWhile the Weyr is a rest and relaxation spot for tired dragons there are a number of activities you can participate in. amoung these are simply basking happily on the beach or the fresh hot Lava flows, body surfing in the waves, swimming in the Pu'u O'o lava lake or the boiling waters of the active entry area, and soaring on the island breezes and trade winds. For the more active you can fly inland to play tag with the jets and helicopters on exercises at the Pohakuloa Military Reservation. For the linguisticly oriented there is a regular Poetry Writing Workshop Saturdays at 4pm Hawaii time (6pm Pacific and 9pm Eastern), it is suggested that you use the Ohana.hi.us.DAL.net server (port: 7000) to avoid netsplits while attending. While there are no regularly scheduled mealtimes Aetobot is available for drinks, snacks, quotes and info on many of the dragons that stop by. In addition, you can always gather fresh seafood right offshore or fly inland to hunt the feral pigs that infest the island. While cattle are also available thanks to the Parker Ranch and other ranches on the northern and western sides of the Island over indulgence is frowned upon.

Poetry Writing Workshop

Run by Dragonheart, this is an occasional workshop, its purpose is to edit, revise and rework poems by Dragons and their friends. There are few rules but they should be spelled out here:

1) we are here to help each other - so no flames.

2) DH runs this as a chaotic autocracy - almost anything goes till he say stop - his word is the final law in this channel.

3) the workshop runs as a round robin examining one poem at a time with all participants free to make comments and suggestions - once an author is satisfied with their poem we will move on to the next poem.

4) while "critics" are not welcome anyone is free to come and add their comments to the discussion as long as they are in the form of constructive suggestions or comments.

5) We read the poems in #AFD_Poetry so we don't have to scroll up and down all the time so please join it as well if you are showing up.
