Textured Metamorphic Rocks
Strongly textured rocks are created by the movement of the rocks under the existing pressures of the crust. The 3 main groups are distinguished by the types of textures.
Foliated - Layered or banded textures that may be folded.
Slates - compated shales showing planes of clay plates.
Phyllites - mica crystals replacing clay plates; crystals not visible - lusater gives a sheen.
Schists - mica(or amphibole) crystals visible, form layers with intermixed other minerals.
Gneisses-bands of different grain types - including mica sheet bands
Cataclastic -Bent, twisted, broken due to sliding of rocks agaisnt and past themselves.
Mylonites - found along fault zones and at the surfaces of faults where blocks have slid agaisnt each other.
Migmatitic - showing signs of flow as a liquid or very soft "plastic". Ranges into igneous flow textures.
