Metasomatic
& Contact Metamorphic Rocks
These rocks form
when magmas and magmatic fluids raise the local temperatures and introduce
a wide variety of new chemicals which interact with those already there.
The main types
are:
Hornfels
- High temperature reaction product between magmas and silicate rocks -
especially shales and rocks derived from them. |
Calciphyre
(Calc-Silicates) - Recrystalized carbonates and silicates with calcium
rich minerals especially Wollastonite, Plagioclase, Diopside and Garnet
as the main silicates. Forms at medium temperatures and low pressures. |
Skarn
- high temperature and low pressure reaction product consisting of carbonates,
silicates and metal sulfides and oxides. |
