Metamorphic rocks are identified based on their textures and mineral compositions. The table below can be used as a "key" to determine the name of a metamorphic rock from these properties.
In addition the accessory minerals present in a metamorphic rock help us to determine the temperature and pressure the rocks were subjected to. The different amounts of heat and pressure are reffered to variously as grades or facies.
