Sediment Types


Boulders: greater than 10 inches (25.6 cm) 
Cobbles: 3-10 inches (6.4 - 25.6 cm)
Pebbles: 1/10th - 3 inches (0.2 - 6.4 cm) 
Sand: 0.006 - 0.2 cm (2mm - .06mm) visible grains
Silt: 0.0004 - 0.006 cm (.06 - .004mm)grains felt but not visible 
Clay: less than 0.0004cm (.oo4mm) surface feels slippery
Dissolved minerals - no grains - the chemicals are in solution in the stream or groundwater
Cements - precipitated minerals between grains - usually clay to silt sized
