Easy Way:

• go to the DAlnet website and use the JAVA client there to log on 
• register a nickname 
• join a channel or two and try the chat experience for a few minutes(3-5).

Harder way:

• download and install a client form the list 
• open it up and set the server to irc.dal.net port 7000 
• register a nickname
