Major Igeneous Rock Types
 
  Granites - course grained felsic rocks with quartz and some mafics
  Syenites - course grained felsic rocks with little or no quartz
  Rhyolites - fine grained felsic rocks
  Diorites -course grained rocks with about equal amounts of felsic and mafic minerals
  Andesites - fine grained rocks with Diorite compositions
  Gabbros - course grained rocks with mafics dominant
  Basalts - fine grained rocks of Gabbroic composition
  Ultramafics - course to fine grained rocks with little or no felsics
Other Important Igneous Rock Terms/Types
  Porphyry - contains both large and small grains and/or crystals
  Pyroclastics - broken and shreaded frozen peices of magma from explosive eruptions - may blanket large areas
  Pegmatites - rocks containing extremely large (>1 inch) crystals
